The midterms are over—a magnificent blue wave knocked out the ruling party and restored some of my faith in our beleaguered country. After a decade of MAGA cruelty and corruption, it finally seems like the tide is turning. America has a lot to celebrate this week.
I rallied to ring in the new era at an election night party in Scio Township, but otherwise spent the week feeling run-down and physically spent. Maybe it’s the end of Daylight Savings, the shift in weather, or just a general fatigue from enduring another bitter election cycle, but I wasn’t in top form. What energy I did have went into designing this poster for my next gig.
Penguin Books has long been a bastion of great design, and I’m particularly fond of the green crime and mystery paperbacks designed by Romek Marber. His layout—the now iconic “Marber grid”—revolutionized the company’s look and feel in the early 1960s, and is instantly recognizable to book lovers. I’ve always wanted to make a Marber-style poster and decided my upcoming show at North Star Lounge should get the treatment. I took a few small liberties in order to convey all the neccessary information, but otherwise remained pretty faithful. The typeface is Gill Sans and the cover painting is by Norwegian artist Jacob Gløersen. Also, come see us on December 5!
